Get to Know Turmeric and All It Has to Offer
What is turmeric and why is everyone talking about it?
Turmeric is a plant native to South Asia, whose rhizome has traditionally been used for its functional value. Its extract concentrates compounds known as curcuminoids, with curcumin being the main one. These compounds give turmeric its characteristic yellow colour and have become a focal point in modern food supplementation. Thanks to advances in extraction technology, it is now possible to obtain highly concentrated and standardised forms, enabling precise and convenient dosing, as with the BCM-95® patent.
Turmeric extract has become a key ingredient in products for those looking to include the benefits of plants in their daily routine. Its popularity in the functional space is due to its phytochemical profile and traditional use across cultures.
Why buy an extract instead of turmeric powder?
Unlike turmeric powder, which is mainly used as a culinary spice, turmeric extract is specifically designed for functional use. While regular powder contains only a small percentage of curcuminoids, extracts like BCM-95® are highly concentrated and standardised, meaning they provide a precise and consistent amount of these key compounds per serving. This distinction is crucial for anyone looking to practically and meaningfully integrate turmeric into their daily routine.
Additionally, standardisation is a key quality marker in food supplementation. It ensures the product contains a guaranteed amount of nutrients, such as curcumin, which is not the case with culinary turmeric powder, where the content can vary widely. Opting for an extract is essential to harness turmeric’s benefits. While it can be complemented by using turmeric powder in meals, it should not be the main source for its effects.
HSN Development – Free from Unnecessary Additives, Top Quality
At HSN, we believe in the simplicity of doing things well.
And as part of this belief, we don’t use unnecessary additives in our products – meaning we avoid all those ingredients added to capsules purely for appearance, usually opacifying agents and colourants, which may make the capsule look “nicer” but only serve to lengthen the ingredients list and make it harder to understand.
The BCM-95® turmeric extract has been developed according to these principles to ensure the highest quality and transparency.
BCM-95® Raw Material – International Recognition
BCM-95® is a patent of Arjuna Natural Pvt. Ltd., the company also renowned for developing the internationally known ashwagandha extract Shoden®.
Their commitment to turmeric extract focuses on developing a 100% turmeric extract made only from turmeric extracts, with no other bioenhancers – synthetic or natural. This patented technology, harnessing 45% AR-Turmerone, is backed by safety guarantees rooted in the highest manufacturing standards.

The difference between this patent and a turmeric extract standardised to 95% curcuminoids is, as Arjuna explains:
A standard, quality turmeric extract is standardised to 95% curcuminoids, consisting of: curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bis-demethoxycurcumin.
BCM-95® (Curcugreen®) is standardised to 95% curcuminoid complex, containing curcuminoids and turmeric essential oil enriched with 45% ar-turmerone – a natural active compound in turmeric rhizome with well-known properties. This means BCM-95® is 100% pure turmeric.
Note: BCM-95®, Curcugreen® and Biocurcumin® are the same product – whichever name you’re looking for, this is the raw material you’ll find in this turmeric extract.
Why is black pepper added to turmeric?
Black pepper is added to turmeric because it contains piperine, a compound that significantly supports the absorption of curcuminoids, including curcumin itself. Curcuminoids have low bioavailability due to rapid metabolism and poor intestinal absorption. Piperine inhibits certain liver enzymes that break down turmeric, enhancing its absorption by up to 2000% (Hatab et al., 2019). This combination enhances turmeric’s effects.

That’s why we use BioPerine®, a patent of Sabinsa Corporation, known for its quality and highest piperine purity, making up 98.5% of its net concentration.
